Two years of rich collaborations / Deux années de riches collaborations
Whereas 2019 proved another fabulous year of creation and live performances, culminating with Wordplay 2019 at Mareel, 2020 took performance to the virtual level - online, with notably a contribution to Shetland's effort to raise funds for a noble cause, our Islands' Foodbank during Lockdown (no.1) last April. This took poetry to new levels with a daunting though rich experience.
collaboration with Poetry put into music by friend & guitarist Alan McKay and performed by his wife, Radina during one of ur memorable Soul Time nights in Lerwick Other musical collaborations with Carol Jamieson currently put on hold due to COVID restrictions... This will resume as soon as those restrictions are lifted again. Tis a game of patience. update / mise à jour: 2018, year of production, travel & performances/année de création, voyages & lectures publiques
2018, Georges Dif's Terre des Vents translated and later published in the spring, followed by a first reading at Glasgow's Project Café (Compass Head now nestled on a shelf at Tell it Slant)... Encounters. Magic memories. Ongoing performances at Mareel and Fjara in Lerwick as well as sharing of poetics at Soul Time, where the pen turns more spiritual. Wonderful events throughout the year. Poetry now firmly in the creative realm. October in Belfast and Co. Antrim with a first reading. Compass Head well received.
November and two major events, Wordplay (Mareel) with a special night as a tribute to the man and poet who opened the door as Literature Development Officer at Shetland Arts Trust back in 2001. On that very special occasion, RAJ (Poet and novelist Robert Alan Jamieson) mc'ed the night. Very poignant. A masterclass also created brand new verse around the theme #14-18Now, which culminated at Armistice 1918-2018 as part of NTS' Pages of The Sea. December's main event took place at Faja in Lerwick as the Singer/Songwriters' Christmas Special.
A fantastic and yet frantic autumn leading to Yule, with a myriad of events, reconvening with friends and fellow poets, including Yell born - Glasgow-based Christie Williamson, who stayed hame in Scalloway with his family last October - Roseanne Watt and Gordon Dargie, with whom reading is always a pleasure, as we did at this year's Shetland Book Festival; as well as meeting, sharing with new fellow poets, including Hazel Frew and Barbara Cumbers. Each first meeting so wonderful and fruitful. Whereas Christie introduced me to Hazel, friend and poet Choman Hardi connected me with Barbara. More poetry recording achieved with Carol Jamieson at the Meadows, leading to a wonderful on-going collaboartion of verse clad with music for performances at the Shetland Singer-Songwriters. Guest-reading at Barbara's Poetry Night in Scalloway with local fellow poets; and now paving for Glasgow for next April, and looking forward to it immensely. Watch this space!

This spring and summer homed securely at two regular events, "Soul Time" and "Shetland Singer/Songwriters" in Lerwick. Moments of pleasure shared with friends and excellent company. Verse & music fused inside that little Magellanic Cloud, safe & secured. April-May-June inside the Little Magellanic Cloud,
with two very special collaborations, one now finished, and the other, ongoing. Visitors - this trio of talented singer/songwriters (pictured above) not only embroiled me in their work, but invited the poet to contribute to the launch of their EP - "I didn't know this would mean home", title itself borrowed from the final line of my short poem - at the South Nesting Hall on the last weekend of April. Merci, dear Visitors. This collaboration felt very special, and remains tattooed in my heart forever. Ongoing collaboartion with Poet Emma Van Woerkom tied through friendship & pens continue to flourish. On her last visit to 60N in May, we have a blueprint of a plan and a project, with an anthology in mind between Shetland and Hay Writers. To Be Continued... A suivre... |

Update / mise à jour: summer / été 2014Summer began in a flurry of words with the publication of Mirds o Wirds - an ingenious pocket sized Word Book compiled by Shetland ForWirds and published by Shetland Times Publication that comprises words (in Shetland dialect & English), celebrating our local dialect as well as images, as well as our Year of the Dialect.
So happy to contribute to this marvelous peerie book! A second project included "Incoming" by Shetland based poet Raman Mundair to which I contributed with an immense pleasure, offering my words as an incomer to Shetland. A book is available via the Shetland Museum.
Last but NOT least...
14 July 2014 will be the day when James Sinclair and I will cry "Vive la révolution!" at Mareel as part of an evening of poetry for a project entitled "Auld Enemies" - the Lerwick leg organised by Shetland Arts thanks to Donald Anderson - as part of a much bigger project called we are enemies, the brainchild of English poet Steven J Fowler. And we had such a delightful time indeed! |

Update / Mise à jour: March/mars 2014
What a grand way to celebrate EarthHour 2014 but through Creatives on 29 March! On this occasion, Mareel Café opened its doors to STOMPING GROUND, a unique performing gang of kids & musicians - no other than Donald Anderson & Alan McKay - who delighted us with rhythms, words and dance as soon as sunset gave way to twilight.
We then slid inside Mareel's Auditorium to entertain folk with a brand new event called "Poetry by Candlelight". A blend of music & poetry, orchestrated by Shetland Arts' Literature Officer, Donald Anderson. Among the local poets featured (in order of appearance) Doug Forrest, Nat Hall, Beth Fullerton, Debbie Nicolson and James Sinclair (Westside Writers' Group) plus emerging poet Roseanne Watt - student-protégée of Kathleen Jamie - Robin & young Kieran, as well as Marie Williamson, who delighted us with verse and music. I seized the moment to share Joe Blades' What happens After the Permafrost Melts (anthologised in "FREDERICTON GREEN-VERTE", ISBN 978-0-9866088-3, by Side-By-Side Editions / Editions Côte-à-Côte) alongside two pieces from From Shore to Shoormal.
With renewed thanks to Shetland Arts for this invitation. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Highlights :
"Two poets sharing a book of poems, inspired by the sea between them."
"The poems just don't talk about the sea, but for both poets, the sea is an ever-present backdrop in their lives."
(...) they are wonderful - a reminder of poetry as playing with words, piling image on image."
"Allard enjoys a look of words on the page"
"Hall is having fun with sounds..."
"The collection was an immense achievement (...) I'd recommend for your own reading, but I can also see them bringing new ideas for French work... exploring the translations, or for pupils to try their own hands to translate the Shetland in English or French and comparing"
"Not to be missed by anyone who enjoys words."

writing for ArtiPeeps - collaborative projects
Artists and writing community focusing on collaborative ventures/ Collaborations artistiques
It started off with English painter James Mackenzie for the purpose of Dickens' Christmas Carol. When Nicky asked which ghost I would choose to write about, my heart raced for that of the present.
Then it continued with responding to emerging neon artist Lili Morgan. Her paintings inspired new verse. I love her audacity with colours. I saw a world so familiar inside her pictorial world.
Now currently taking part of the audacious project entitled "Transformations", with a gang of poets. We are responding to Ovid's "Metamorphoses" over a period of 15 months. It is both challenging and a source of great joy.
Happy reading / Bonne lecture!

Now currently taking part of the audacious project entitled "Transformations", with a gang of poets. We are responding to Ovid's "Metamorphoses" over a period of 15 months. It is both challenging and a source of great joy.
